The new irrigation pump house at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has now been completed - designed by Hugh Broughton Architects to integrate into the natural environment and support the institution’s broader climate goals.
Part of Kew’s strategy to become Climate Positive by 2030, the pump house provides a vital infrastructure upgrade to help secure long-term water resilience across the site.
Xylotek developed the technical design of the timber structure in collaboration with engineers Format, and led the procurement and installation of both the timber elements and the primary steel structure, which was fabricated by Rank Engineering.
The design draws inspiration from natural forms, with a lattice of interlocking Scottish larch struts referencing palm fronds and fallen leaves. The timber’s untreated surface will gradually silver over time, allowing the building to settle into the surrounding landscape.
By using UK-grown timber and a prefabricated approach, the project reflects a commitment to low-impact construction and environmental stewardship.
