Exeter College’s historic Jackson Library in Oxford has reopened following a major restoration project designed to improve accessibility, light, and study provision — while preserving the building’s neo-Gothic character.
Originally designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1857, the Grade II listed library has been reimagined for contemporary use by Nex Architecture, with Beard Construction as main contractor and Donald Insall Associatesadvising on conservation.
Xylotek was engaged to design-develop, supply, and install a series of prefabricated timber elements — including the mezzanine, lift shaft, stairwell, internal walls, and roof deck. These interventions support the college’s goal of creating an inclusive and adaptable study environment while working sensitively within a heritage context.
Congratulations to all involved in bringing this significant academic space into a new chapter of its life.
