Xylotek delivered this theatre stair, plus a stairway to the floor below, as part of Arup’s new offices in the new 80 Charlotte Street building by Make Architects. Arup Architecture designed the stairs to form a social centrepiece within two floors of flexible-working space.

The main structure is of Douglas fir cross laminated timber, chosen for its visual appearance and because its is harder wearing that the more conventional spruce CLT. Surround acoustic screens are of oak, and there are bespoke handrails and other componentry detailed by Xylotek.

The CLT and glulam components were supplied by Piveteau-Bois to dimension and then worked on in our Bristol workshop to produce the detailed geometries, carry out pre-assembly and add surface treatments. Fire testing was carried out to ensure that both a non-slip finish and the required fire resistance was achieved.

The installation needed careful coordination given the tight access to the site, and was carried out with hand operated lifting equipment.

Opening in early 2022, the theatre stairs will provide a space for informal gathering, meetings and lectures, and provides the main circulation between the office floors.
